User accounts

How do I create an account?

Visit the Registration page and fill in a few details about yourself. When you submit the details you will be send an activation email. Simply click on the click in the email and enter the password you used to create your account. You're done!

What are the benefits of creating an account?

Creating an account allows you to:

• Share your own videos with other site users
• Rate and comment on videos
• Create a network of friends with similar musical tastes
• Build a list of your favorite videos, or build custom channels to group your favorite videos together

I already have an account, but I've forgotten my password - How do I retrieve it?

Passwords are not stored in the database in a retrievable format. To reset your password, visit the Forgot My Password page. You will be asked for your email address, and your security question/answer combination. The site will send you an email with a link you will need to click on, to verify yourself. Should you encounter any problems with this process, contact us using the feedback form.

Uploading videos

Allowable content

It is important that you understand what constitutes allowable content. You shall not upload offensive, pornographic or violent content to this website. Any such content shall be removed. If you see such content on the site, you may report it to the site administrators by clicking on the relevant links to the right of the video player.

You shall not upload content to which you do not have a legal right to do so. This site is meant to be a showcase for your own musical talent. Basically, if you did not make the video or if you did not star in it or you did not perform in the video you must not upload it to this site. Any such infringing material will be taken down. Repeat violations may result in termination of your account.

How do I upload a video?

Once you have created an account, click the Upload a video now button at the top right of the page. You can enter some information about your video, tag it, and choose the file to be uploaded. When you've filled in all the information simply press Submit. You will be shown the progress of your upload. Once the progress reaches 100%, there will be a short delay while your file is processed. If the upload is sucessful you will receive a sucess message.

Is there a maximum allowed length for videos?

We do not limit the duration of the videos, but we do limit the uploaded file size to 100MB, for those special "concept" moments. Files are converted to a fixed dimensions/bitrate once they have been uploaded, and this may affect the duration of the video. If we see any problems with the videos you upload, we will contact you.

What if I have problems uploading a video

Should you encounter any problems during this process, please contact the site administrator using the feedback form, and include full details of the file you were trying to upload, including the file type (format), the file extension, and the size of the file. The system records any errors in uploading videos, but tell us the time when you attempted the upload and it will help us to narrow down the problem.

Bear in mind the following when trying to work out a problem with uploading:-

• We accept uploads in .avi, .mov, .mpg, .wmv files only.
• We allow a maximum file size upload of 100MB
• If the server detects that the mime-type of your file does not match the file extension, then it will reject the file.
• We may be experiencing temporary difficulties due to extreme server load. Please try again, and if the problem persists, contact us using the feedback form.

How do I manage my uploaded videos?

Once you have logged in, look for the link "My Uploads" located in the User Control Panel in the right side column of the page and at the top right of the page. You will be taken to the Uploads page where you can edit or delete existing videos, or upload new videos.

On the My Uploads page you can:-

• Change the introduction and title of your video
• Assign it to a new genre
• Add/edit/delete the tags associated to it.
• Change the image icon of the video that is displayed in search results and at the start of the video. (coming soon)

Do you have any tips on producing video for the web?

Not yet, but we are planning on adding a section to help our users prepare content for the web. Stay tuned.

User Profiles

How do I update my profile?

Click the My Profile link at the top right of the page. This will take you to your own profile, and if you are logged in, then you will see various Edit buttons. For example, under the Bio tab, you will see a button for Edit Bio. Click that and you can type a new Bio, or enter HTML to style it.

How do I update my Avatar/icon image?

Click the My Profile link at the top right of the page. This will take you to your own profile, and if you are logged in, then you will see an Edit picture button under your Avatar/icon image. Click that and you will be asked to upload a new image.

Browse to the image on your hard drive and click Select, then click the Upload button.

The image will be uploaded to the server and you will be presented with the opportunity to crop the picture to your desired size. Simple move the red dotted box around on the picture by clicking and dragging it around. You can resize the red box by dragging the corners till you have the size you want. When you're ready, click the OK button at the top left of the picture, and you can see how the picture looks on your profile. Then if you're happy, click the Done button.

Can I upload photos to my profile?

We are working on a photo gallery component for the user profiles. (Coming soon)

Friends and Channels

How do I add friends?

When you visit a user's profile page, you will be given the option to add them as a friend by using the "Send a Friend Request" link in the right column of the screen. When you click on that link, you can send a short message to that user requesting that they add you as a friend. If they accept the request, you will be friends!

How do I block users from contacting me?

If a user sends an unwanted friend request, you may block them at the time you receive the request. They will be unable to send any further friend requests to you.

We are developing further controls to enable you to stop certain activities by people on your blocklists.

How do I subscribe to channels?

Click on the Subscribe to this Channel button underneath the channel's title. Whenever you log in to MyMusicVid.com you will be notified if any videos have been added to your subscribed channels in the previous 7 days.

How do I unsubscribe from channels?

Visit the channel, and click the Unsubscribe from this channel button underneath the channel title.

How do I create more channels, or edit existing channels?

Once you have logged in, look for the link "My Channels" located in the User Control Panel in the right side column of the page. You will be taken to the page where you can create new channels and edit or delete existing channels.

What are the benefits of creating channels?

Think of channels as playlists where you can group together various videos that you like. When you are browsing the videos on the site, you will see a link to the right of the video player that says "Add to my Channel". Choose the channel you want to add it to, and click on Add.

How do I send a video link to my friends?

When you are browsing the videos on the site, you will see a link to the right of the video player that says "Send to a friend". Click that link and a form will appear. Fill in the details, write a brief message if you want to, and click Send. That's it! Your friend will not be signed up to any mailing lists, and the email address is not stored in our database.

Charts and voting

How do I vote for a video?

To the right of the video you will see the star rating system. If you are logged in, you will be able to choose your rating from 1 (poor) to 5 (great!) by clicking on the appropriate stars.

How often can I vote for a video?

You can vote for each video once per week. You will not be able to vote again if you have rated the video within the previous 7 days.

How are views recorded?

Views are currently counted at the end of a video play, assuming that more than 50% of the video has been played. We are working on new systems to more accurately record the views.

How are the Charts calculated?

The charts are calculated on a weekly basis, using a weighted ranking system that takes into account the number of votes for each video, the value of each vote for each video, and the average votes for every video across the site. For this reason, you may see videos with high rating ranked lower in the charts than videos with lower ratings. They simply had less votes in total. If a particular genre has no videos that received enough votes to calculate a chart, then no chart will be produced for that genre that week.

Can I see previous week's charts?

Every week's chart is recorded in the database, if there were enough rated videos in each genre for that week. We are working on a chart archive where you will be able to see the charts from previous weeks, where one exists.
